"Speech is much more than pronunciation - but it is impossible without it! Pronunciation is not the beall and endall; effective communication is what matters, and this is to be the teacher's constant goal." Paul Tench (1981)

The teaching of units of sound won't take students very far. Speech is ideas made physical through the voice. To "voice out" our ideas, we must be able to work with the code successfully, that is the language, to transform ideas into understandable, coherent sentences, and thus become effective communicators. Teachers should never forget that what our students need is to be able to express themselves in the target language.
ResponderExcluirHi.
ResponderExcluirAs we saw in the first statement, pronunciation is necessary but it’s not the only important thing. Students have a tendency to believe speak well is to know how to “say” the words. Because of this, they keep trying to repeat new words several times. However, sometimes they are not even thinking about the word’s meaning. Then, it’s our responsibility to show the students communication as the goal of a good pronunciation and learning.
One thing that may bother students is trying to correctly pronounce some sounds of the English language, it's important to have a good pronunciation, but as already said, words alone doesn't mean much. Communication means understand and be understood, and for that, pronunciation is very important, as well as, making yourself clear.
ResponderExcluirRhythm is both a feature of and product of the phonological structure of English. The phonology of any language is a system, so that a change in one part of the system will affect some or all of the other parts. I do believe it's not the most important but as important as the others. It doesn't impede communication as unknowing the meaning does but the communication can be not so effective as it should be.

ResponderExcluirGood pronunciation is part of the effective communication. Voice quality, rhythm, intonation and even body language are also important parts of speech. As teachers we should motivate our students to express themselves, improve their abilities like pronunciation and avoid correcting them all the time. We can't make them frustated and discouraged. However, it is necessary to develop an awareness of the problems that mispronunciation might cause.
ResponderExcluirJust as the first impression of a person is established by his/her appearance, the "first sounds" that the person speaks contribute to the first impression we get from someone. We can tell a lot about a person just by hearing this person speak. Correct pronunciation and stress are the only possibility we have to make language intelligible through oral communication. It's not a question of producing a perfect American or British accent, but I personally think that a language (any language) should be spoken and taught as correctly as it is possibly achievable with respect to all its aspects, pronunciation and stress included.
ResponderExcluirPaula said something very important about communication: body language. As a matter of fact, effective communication can go beyond and speech is as important as pronunciation.
ResponderExcluirI like Alexandre´s phrase: "Communication means understand and be understood" don´t be so worried about the pronunciation of single words. A good communication depends on good pronounce. Our students´goals is communication and a lot of them are not worried to speak correctly but just speak, and using hands, body try to communicate.
ResponderExcluirAs teachers we must be acquainted with all aspects of the language, how it can be processed by students, as it was said, the students want to speak, communicate and we have to conduct them to an effective communication, good pronunciation, intonation and so on. Most of times we just teach them effectively when we learn conciously first.
