"Pronunciation is not an optional extra for the language learner, any more than grammar, vocabulary or any other aspect of language is. If a learner's general aim is to talk intelligebly to others in another language, a reasonable pronunciation is important. A teacher has to give due attention to it along with everything else."
Paul Tench.

  1. I agree with the statement above. I do think we english teachers must teach pronunciation as a important part of the learning proccess. For example we can’t separate reading from writing, the same situation happens with pronunciation we can’t leave it behind, it must be worked together. What’s more pronunciation is one of the main student’s goal.

  2. I agree with Fernanda, as teachers the pronunciation is very important to our students and to our competence too. We judge all the time, correcting students' mistakes and ourselves, so teachers must be prepared for all.

  3. I agree with the statement and consider the pronunciation a great challenge for teachers to be constantly alert and brush up on themselves in order to help their students, even more the beginners, sometimes it's common to make some mistakes when they want to make it easy for "brazilian ears" and pronounce it close to the Portuguese sounds.

  4. I agree with all and just to add more informations be a teacher must be a huge challange as Rosangela said. We need to mix all subjects in Enlgish and empahasis as much as possible for them to learn and speak a perfect pronunciation in English.

  5. Hi, there!

Pronunciation is about the 'music' of language. When we sing it well, everyone applauds us, everyone who knows the song immediately empathises with us. So caring about our students' pronunciation is like teaching a singing class, we want them to try and sing in tune. Songs brought me first into English language, and that's how I learned to treasure pronunciation.

  6. Hello!

Teachers agree that pronunciation is very important when we are teaching and learning English. But sometimes it’s very hard to achieve a good level on it. Teachers try many different approaches to help their students and even to improve their own pronunciation. As teachers, we need to study hard and constantly to show the students different ways to become a better English speaker.

  7. Hi everybody!

To master a good level of pronunciation it takes time and hardworking. As teachers, we must keep it in mind and always try to improve ourselves and that way be good role models. We need to guide our students into this skill, helping them to distinguish the sounds, rhythm and intonation of the language.

  8. I agree with these comments. As teachers, we have to encourage our students to develop this skill since the very early stages of speaking. It´s not so easy, but we need to help them to recognize the stress and intonation patterns of English. I realize it is the first step to perfect their pronunciation.

  9. I do agree. First of all, we should think about our own improvement so that we can help our students to speak clearly and confidently. Good English pronunciation make people understand us and be willing to listen to us as well. However, it's not an easy task. We need to do it a lot of times to get it right and think of pronunciation as if it were a sporting skill. Practice makes perfect!

  10. Since they are the main source of undrestanding and can directly affect the meaning of a sentence, pronunciation and stress are essential. Without an understanding of how pronunciation in connected speech differs from the written word, students find it difficult to recognize what they may already know. Learning (and teaching) the pronunciation and stress of words is very important, because it's directly linked to a better understanding of native speakers and improves the students' ability to communicate.

  12. As I posted, a good communication demands a good pronounce.
Just communication demands a pronounce but of course teacher has to teach pronunciation to the students, but depending on students needs teacher can give more attention to pronunciation.

  13. Teaching pronunciation isn't an easy task but it is very important to provide our students the tools they need to speak effectively. We do need to give importance to this skill in order to help our students to achieve proficiency.
